I played games all week

Hey guys, I’m back from my gaming binge. I cleared out a lot of games that were on my playlist, and tried to relax a bit in general. It’s been a long time since I played so many video games in a week.

I started off with Shadows of Adam, which is a SNES-like JRPG that had quite a strong nostalgic impact on me. I spent so much of my teenage years playing Final Fantasy, Golden Sun, Chrono Trigger and all that, but it’s been a very long time since I’ve played a traditional JRPG. The newer stuff doesn’t grip me at all, and I haven’t replayed the old games cause I’m sick of random battles and the huge time sink. Maybe I should give the Final Fantasy re-releases a try, since they seem to have some nice convenience features. Final Fantasy 9 in particular, that’s my favourite. Anyway, Shadows of Adam was a mediocre game I guess, but it got me thinking about JRPGs again, which was nice.

I finally got round to finishing The Witness… well, the regular stuff anyway. I’ll probably keep working on the optional puzzles over time, as I’ve already done quite a lot of them. I think this is my favourite puzzle game ever. I’ve never been so captivated by a puzzle game before, I usually get bored of them quite quickly. I’ve played it for 30 hours and I’m still into it, even though it’s a very slow and often frustrating experience. The game just keeps calling me to explore and try to figure everything out. I think it’s the complete lack of instructions that does it for me. It just leaves me alone to wander around and curiously poke things at my own pace. Also, Ronja challenged me to beat the game without taking any notes. I’m quite proud of myself for achieving that, I think it stretched my memory a bit.

And finally, I got into the Shantae games. The music and character animations are so good. I was a bit surprised at how sexual the games are. I thought it was just going to be a sexy main character, but it goes a lot further than that, with tons of innuendo and weird fetish material. Not complaining at all. I started off playing Pirate’s Curse, which I enjoyed a lot until the later levels. It turns out I sabotaged my enjoyment of the game because I didn’t realize you could buy permanent attack upgrades, and all of the enemies had crazy amounts of health as a result. So that sucked. I played it through again on pirate mode, going for most of the achievements and getting 100% of the items. The levels designs are soooo good for speed running. You don’t even realize until you return to the earlier levels with all of your new abilities. So that game made me a fan of the series instantly. I played Half Genie Hero next, which in terms of gameplay and story I think was actually inferior to the previous game. It just wasn’t as gripping. But it was still a good game overall, and totally recommend the series.

Only recently got into Shantae myself. Nintendo did a sale, and I got all of them for pretty cheap. Shantae (for GBcolor) was tough as nails but rewardingly fun. Risky’s Revenge was a lotta fun, and the controls improved immensely, which was satisfying to no end. Currently in Pirate’s Curse, and it’s a been pretty good so far.

I’m not the kind of guy who wants to speedrun games, and games designed around that concept (like Shantae or the Metroid series) have to be pretty enjoyable in their own right for me to have much interest in them. Money is a rare resource for me, so I don’t just throw my money at everything that MAY be fun, not without research first (learned the hard way with Splatoon, Overwatch, and Final Fantasy 13). But I think the Shantae games are games I’d come back to for funsies. I love me some naughty humor as much as I do… well… all other variants of humor. I’m not picky. Also Shantae’s cute (and also hot).

The Witness is an amazing game. It’s surprising how much innovation you can get out of drawing a line through a grid.

Good luck with the Challenge, if you haven’t done it yet. You’ll know it when you see it.

Obviously you should play the Osu! Fallen Blood because it’s /clearly/ relaxing XD
I actually recently beat it, not well, but I beat it :yay:
I am no where near the level of the guy on youtube who played Fallen Blood and got a 98 % :scared:

Yeah Pirate’s curse is probably the best one. Risky’s Revenge can be fun as well if you don’t mind some backtracking and more complex mazes.

FF, CT, Breath of Fire, Secret of Mana…
… Just thinking about SNES games makes me feel nostalgic. reading your post I think that Romancing Saga 3 could be a nice addition for your playlist,in case you don’t know this game yet. check it out if not.

About your puzzle. thinking about ‘fewest steps solutions’ in your puzzles could also be an exciting thing and your toughest ones maybe could have a step counter and a ranking list. just a thought :smirk:

Ahh, dip. I love me everything you just cited at the top. Been a long time since I’ve played Secret of Mana. I just replayed Breath of Fire 3, and a friend at college and I are systematically going through all the old Final Fantasies (currently going through FF5). Never did beat Chrono Trigger, still sitting right at the door to the final boss, staring Lavos down through the doorway.

If you also mentioned Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Illusion of Gaia, Earthworm Jim, FF: Mystic Quest (I suppose you did blanket statement), and A Link to the Past, I would have started to question if I had schizophrenia. :scared:

Yep, I was talking from FF as label, not about particular ones(I still like the 13 series somewhat and the 3rd part because it had a somewhat unique battle system). Same way with SoM, where I also include Seiken Densetsu 3 and Secret of Evermore (SoE). A link to the past I know as well ofc and same I do with Illusion of Gaia where the riddles gave me the kick (SoE is similarly focused on riddles). I never been in touch with Earthworm Jim (Didn’T wake my interest ), but maybe I should do. The Super Mario is huge and I think I could play nearly every game of it but I’ve never known of a rpg. might need check it out some time. :smirk:

The writing is what makes it so enticing.
It’s not just about what you see.
It’s about what you feel as well!
    :hurray:
