EBF5: Scan

Working on the last few spell animations. The first one makes all foes attack the targeted player. Not neglecting water spells this time.

Also new scan animation. You’ll be seeing it a lot so I put a lot of effort into it! Random text included.

Gifs are cool but these really need to be seen with the sound effects. ):

Sorry if I just haven’t seen or heard of this, but do you have an estimated time for when ebf5 is going to be released? And if you do, when?

Glad to see more spells, always one of my favorite parts about your games. Taunt skill seems like it could be real useful too.

Glad we are getting more water spells, but aren’t there a few other elements that are lacking coverage? You did a good job about rounding stuff out from 3 to 4, giving us more than 2 wind moves and actual water spells. But it still seems like there could be a bit more coverage.

:smirk: Fire, Lightning, and Ice are all very well covered by every party member. Both physical and magical.

:smirk: Earth has gotten a lot more coverage in 4, with Matt and Anna having earth skills, and the special skills giga drill and Gaia blossom series. Mostly physical, one magical.

:smirk: Poison is fairly evenly spread between all party members. With the exception of vines and bamboo trap, most are fairly weak damage wise but have good secondary effects like debuffing magical defense for acid, and of course dealing DoT. Some magical, some physical.

:smirk: Bomb is the element I was specifically mentioning earlier. While it was exceptionally useful in 3; it was mellowed out in 4 and only given 1 extra skill, the blast series. I feel this element more than any other needs to be brought out a bit both for enemies and for the players. I don’t know the exact element scheme you plan on having for the enemies made so far, but most seem to not have bomb as a primary element, other than possibly the tank bosses. Especially with you taking some of the older enemies, like the fish, and making them a bit more varied with there elements, which while awesome, still detracts from the total amount of bomb-type enemies. On top of this, Lance almost has a monopoly on bomb spells, with the possible exception of the blast series if you teach that to Natalie. I will admit it is one of the weirder and stronger elemental types you have, but it would be nice to see a bit more use of it. One physical and two magical skills, few but strong.

:smirk: Wind is also a bit more lacking. Anna brought in the hurricane series, while power metal and shockwave were both kept in. Again, it could probably use a bit more, primarily focusing on physical attacks this time around. As of now, to my knowledge, all player wind skills are solely magical.

:smirk: Water used to be the worst offender in terms of coverage, having nothing other than water based weapons for the player’s use in 3. In 4, there seemed to be plenty of water based enemies though. It could use a bit more coverage in 5, but it seems that water has been one of your primary focuses in terms of increasing elemental coverage for you already. Two physical series, and one magical series.

:smirk: Holy and Dark I felt were a bit like bomb, having fewer skills but all of them being exceptionally powerful or having very powerful effects. There are actually quite a few holy and dark type spells in 4, but that might seem less as I primarily used the high damage/multi-hit ones: Like pulsar series, screamer series, antimatter series, holy sword and judgement. Talisman, dark flare, and holy fire rounded out the coverage a bit more between Lance and Anna, but there were a few that were almost never used, such as soul arrow(typically I made sure to keep myself buffed and the enemy debuffed) and sacrifice(for obvious reasons). Enemies, especially the stronger late game ones, tend to have these two elements, so the coverage there is also pretty good. I do like the look of the purple holy explosion skill though, but I feel they are already pretty rounded out. Dark skills are all magical, holy are mostly magical with a few physical.

:wut: Tl;dr: Fire, Ice, Lightning and poison seem fine coverage wise. Bomb could use a bit more expansion so Lance doesn’t have a possible monopoly, and more enemies could have the bomb element too. Wind has gotten better but could use some physical type skills. Water you have already been focusing on. Holy and dark are pretty well rounded for both damage and support, but dark lacks physical skills.

One other possible thing I didn’t mention in that huge list up there would be to make sure each element has at least one or two skills that focus less on damage and more on buffs/debuffs/support. Skills that we use specifically for the reason of support rather than as just a nice little extra effect. Fire has berserk, Ice has blizzard for freezing, poison has most of its skills based around that, wind has power metal for healing, almost all water moves wet the target, holy has talisman seal, and dark has screamer.

Well shoot, this turned out to be a lot longer than I planned. Hope you actually stuck through it all Matt, or atleast read the tl;dr at the end. Sorry for my use of emotes, you don’t have bullet points on this chat system as far as I am aware.

I suppose a few things I forgot to clarify:

Completely forgot to include earth in the tl:dr. It seems like its in a pretty good place, but could possibly use a few more magical based skills, as most of physical. It could also use a ‘support’ style of spell too. Giga drill is kind of there, but its basically a more situation earthquake series spell that you use before debuffing. Maybe a rock tomb or quicksand spell that decreases evade greatly?

I used ‘series’ as a way of grouping up spells that were direct upgrades from the last, such as fire, fireball, and firestorm. I considered them 1 spell as its my understanding you’ll be removing the weaker variants and letting most spells be toggled between single and multi-hit, making skills like fire storm redundant. Plus once you get the second version, you never use the weaker variant.

I also didn’t include Limit Breaks in my round up, just because they are far less common than normal skills. There seems to be a limit break for each element though, including several that match the weapon. Black hole, nuke, and super nova I never used just because they did damage to me too.

There will be more status effects this time – so I guess a lot more useful support spells that have them.
About the elements – I’ve already thought about this and they will be distributed equally among the characters, each element will have a skill in 3 out of 5 players.

Cool, glad to hear you are already planning that, thanks!

On a side note, I think I remember you talking about it before, but are shared skills still going to be a thing in EBF5?

To back this, I think Bomb in particular needs more even distribution. Lance had the majority of bomb skills, which is understandable, but still very inconvenient at times.

A bit late, but if MP remains in the game, some things I would like to see with it are spells that cost a lot more MP and a skill that redistributes MP.

He is also removing the multi-hit spells as their own unique thing. Instead he is making it like Final Fantasy 3, where you can select all enemies to get hit by the same spell, but at reduced damage. Instead of 120 fire ball on a single enemy, 80 fireball on all enemies, from 2 to 5 at a time.

i wonder if he could add some detail like chanching the “over 9000” and “kill it with fire” thing the power level stuff prob wont happen but chanching one word depending on what is it weak should be easy

I love the new spells, especially the water one. In the other games a lot of spells and foes were similar and boring. These however, are very creative and, in my opinion, are far better than the ones in the previous game.
