EBF5: Skills preview

Hey guys. I’m working on updating the skills from EBF4.
A lot of the animations are being redone, and a lot of skills are getting alternate forms – for example Anna’s spark arrow can target either a single foe, or multiple foes. Gaps in the skill tree are being filled in – Nettle will have a stronger form, Antimatter will have a regular spread form, etc. I probably won’t post much until these are all done.

New skills I’ll have to save for later – the foes and NoLegs need to be done first.

EBF4 had too many skills, so things will work a bit differently this time. Similar skills like Fire, Fireball and Firestorm will become a single skill. I’m not sure what I’ll do with special skills, but there will probably be less of them – and a lot of them will be moved to equips and summons instead.

Also, thanks to NASA for letting me be lazy with space backgrounds.

I’m really hopeful for a secret team limit break usable when every party member has a maxed limit gauge at once. Even if it’s not practical, as long as it’s awesome.

As far i as read i only see people who don’t seem to understand what Matt was saying about removing some spells.

About myself i understand it like this : Each spell will have only one symbol but at the activation we will choose which type we’ll use : one target low damage / one target high damae / all ennemies medium damage / (and maybe one more) All ennemies very high damage on one ennemy and medium damage on others ennemies.

I understand this like this maybe i’m mistaken so i hope Matt will explain it with more precision than me and maybe a little more better than me too.

    Thanks for reading.

By the way here is some bacon for you Matt : :bacon: :bacon: :bacon: :bacon: :bacon:

Wait… Is Genesis a reference to Neon Genesis Evangelion? :ooo:

Love the new look, though I :yay: thought your planet looked fine before. It’s always good to improve, though. Are you going to use the same image for the Ion Cannon?

I think I’ll miss the giant skill trees because they gave me things to spend my AP on, but on the other hand, I never used Fire after getting Fireball, so meh. I will definitely miss the tons of special skills as it added a level of customization to the characters, but there were a bunch I never used, like Flare, Bind, and Cloudburst (Except when my backseat gamer brothers tried to tell me how to game, and I started trolling them by using non-attacks.). Maybe make it so the extras can be learned by all players instead of being limited to only a couple (i.e. Lance can’t learn Purify, but everyone else can). Or, better yet, the special skills can be learned by more than one character? :stars:

Very exciting news indeed, glad to see those crappy old skills will be somehow taken care of, and I’m curious to see how that’s handled. Also, loving how the new limit breaks are looking so far! :yay:

I must say I agree with the cutting-down of the special skills. One of the things I liked in EBF3 was that when I got to Akron I had just got enough skill points to max out all my skills. In EBF4, on the other hand, I ended the game with a few main skills unmaxed and the special skills almost untouched, because what’s the point of giving Matt spark when I could just switch him out with one of the other 3 characters who have lightning-elemental skills?

I think balancing the game more with an increased amount of water and earth skills would be great :stars: and a weaker version of judgement that hits all foes would be nice too! A dark wraith summon would also be cool, with a low chance of instantly killing the for like annihilate but with a lesser chance which would be cool for a chanced-based playthrough :hurray: lance snipe should also have a chance to instantly kill foes too :yay: hope u like my ideas

Oh my God, did you really draw all that Earth?! THAT’S AMAZING :ooo:
(If it already was in EBF4, I had no time to notice it)

It’d be kind of a shame to remove a ton of different special spells. While I do agree with you merging various, similar powers like fire-fireball-fire storm, tremor-quake-cataclysm, ect; I really enjoyed having a bunch of shared skills that were shared among the party.

If anything, I think it would be interesting to slim down the personal skills, but maintain or increase the number of shared skills. Or at the very least, make sure whatever special/shared skills available are pretty unique when compared to the standard skills. Like how Hellfire is not just a very powerful fire type move, but also bezerks; cleanse removes stat penalties along with debuffs; Giga drill pierces defenses and increases damage vs buffed foes; or how fright is not just a weak dark spell, but also debuffs magic attack for follow ups.

The special skills in particular added a lot of different builds that were fun to mess around with. In my main game, I actually gave Anna revive instead of Natalie, so that Nat could focus more as a black mage than a sage. It also allowed me to round out everyone’s elemental coverage, like giving Anna hellfire, Lance Holy Fire and soundwave, Matt the lightning and water versions of tremor-quake-cataclysm skills, and Natz the earth based magic. It also added some nice tough choices in who got which skill/ who could use it more.

The special skills were nice in EBF4, but the sheer variety and power of them, (and summons, and elemental weapons,) also presented a problem. See, they basically gave every possible frontline access to everything at once, rendering the fourth character largely inconsequential. It was probably the biggest strike against ever switching your backup out to the front. You say “tough choices,” I say “reasons to leave Lance on the bench.”

Merging spells that become useless into their stronger counterparts sounds incredibly useful! Less UI clutter is always good.

Oh i think i see what your trying to do with the skills so having fire skill to start with and when you upgrade it enough it turns into the fireball skill and so on until it reaches firestorm and instead of having every skill all clustered into one screen you can have the amount of room for skills reduced so it doesn’t take up like quarter of the screen which is good so it doesn’t look as overwhelming like with some games ive played in the past. like world of Warcraft there was so much skills and different tabs i had no idea what was happening so i think that’s a brilliant compromise Matt :yay:

Wow, Genesis has abysmally horrible aim. Only ONE out of those crosses is (presumably) hitting the area where the target is.

And yeah, I think I agree with long. Not sure how it’ll work, but a team limit break will kinda be great.

” Nettle will have a stronger form, Antimatter will have a regular spread form, etc.”

Maybe I’m a bit too dumb this morning, but are you adding similar skills or removing similar skills? I feel confused ❓

Sounds like there’s going to be a lot of removing skills that were outclassed early in the game/rarely used at all, and then the ones that remain are going to be re-balanced.

I think he means the spells will be under one category, so a single skill, say Fire, will have a single-target option that is stronger and a multi-target option that is weaker that you can choose between while only paying for one skill. Think clicking fire and having the option to use Fireball or Firestorm in one skill. As for the Nettle and Antimatter, he’ll be adding a second, more powerful, skill past Nettle (Like upgrading from Fume to Eruption in EBF4). Or like Lance’s dark attack (Dark Shot) goes from a single hit spell to a focused hit with a little splash damage Antimatter), and will now have an intermediate stage that targets all foes for equal damage across.

Not sure if that helped at all, or if I just made the confusion worse. :hurray: Have some bacon either way! :bacon: :bacon: :bacon:
