Thoughts About Patreon (part 2)

This is a continuation of my previous post, where I explained why I’m considering making a Patreon. No one seemed to have any major objections to me setting up a Patreon, as long as I stuck to the rules I outlined there.

I’ve spent the day researching what other creators have done with Patreon, and I’ve come up with this list of reward tiers. I’d be interested to hear what you think of these:

Supporter: $1 per month
• Get early access to buggy, spoiler-full, alpha versions/demos that otherwise won’t be released to the public until they are finished. Over the next few months this will include the entire EBF5 world map, and a boss fight demo.
• You also get the “Supporter” role on the EBF Discord, making you a trusted user who can post links and images in any channel, and gives you access to the “Alpha Discussion” and “Alpha Bugs” channels for discussing the content mentioned above. (You still gotta follow the rules!)
• And finally the loyalty program: With your continued support, you can request a Steam key for any of my games for every $15 you’ve given. (you can give extra keys to your friends or use this as a way to pre-order future games)

Super Supporter: $4 per month
• Same as the above, but you get the “Super Supporter” Discord role, which does nothing besides letting you show off.

Wall of Thanks: $8 per month
• Get your name listed on the “Wall of Thanks” on my website,, letting visitors know that you’re kind of cool!
• This lasts as long as your contribution does, and can include a link to some profile or website of yours. (subject to my approval, maybe contact me with your details first!)
+ Includes Super Supporter perks
(100 slots only)

Maybie we could use patreon to influence you to bring EBF TD back to life?!

Just kidding, I think its good that you’re strongly considering patreon, the 4$ tier tho. (I just wonder how many would like to show off  )

You’d be surprised. We as a species are just ever-so-slightly egotistical creatures.

I agree with this post, up to the point about EBF Tower Defense…. because I’m not kidding. I want that in my life.

i don’t know if that’s considered “influencing the game content”, but it might be a good idea to add a tier where you can choose the appearance of some npcs

Heh, some people would probably love that. But I don’t think I would personally enjoy implementing other people’s characters for money. :P

I would say go for it. Just make it clear on your Patreon page what the perks are and the purpose of the Patreon as you have on this blog, so people can’t come out with the ‘double-dipping’ complaint as you mentioned. I would be very likely to donate a dollar a month, as I’m not exactly rich myself but I love the EBF games and would like to know I am helping contribute, even if it is just a little bit.

Go for it. You won’t be forcing anyone to pay for it and the 15$ donation for a free game thing is more than fair for those who don’t like Patreon. I don’t see any downside to this. Don’t worry about possible haters. Patreon is a brilliant thing for relatively small time content makers like yourself. It allows your fans to support you as much as they would like, and if anyone wants to stop they can do it at any time.

Like I said, I see no legitimate downside, so go for it.

Would you have an easy way to check how much people have actually contributed in total? Because that’s pretty important if you want to do the key-buying scheme.

I personally wouldn’t become a patron at the moment, but it’s certainly something I might consider in the future. I certainly have no objections to it. :smirk:

I’m not super familiar with Patreon yet, but I believe I can see the total someone has given me. I dunno if they can see it though. :P

I don’t think you should limit the wall of thanks supporters. You never know how many people might want to support you in the long run, and this limit might keep people who want to give a lot from doing so.

:stars: I think it’s a great idea! I’ve wanted to support you more for a while, but can’t, outside of buying all your games multiple times, which I have done for EBF4 and BH2. :ooo: I’m not rich or anything, but I’d happily sign up for the $1 a month patreon if it meant better financial security for you. I owe it to you for all the writing material your games have spewed from me. XD

Can I just start giving you 8 bucks now? I love your games and honestly, to me that’s lower than what I would want to give. Like part of me says make it 15, or add another higher tier, that would be great. I don’t really know what you could do for rewards, that would be up to you, tough I believe I could just donate what I want as an option (it’s on other patreons). Either, keep up the good work.

1$ a month is something i can do. is there any way you can give us a buggy, non-spoiler full, alpha demos?

Also, im not super familier with patreon, can we just sign up to pay for 10 months or if we sign up do we have to pay for ever? can we just give you $10 straight up?

It signs you up indefinitely and bills you once a month, but you can cancel at any time. It’s not great for one-time donations.

Honestly I think you’re underselling yourself here. :stars: This is the single most attractive Patreon set up I’ve ever personally seen. So as far as I’m concerned you should feel free to set up higher dollar amounts on at least the lowest level and probably all of them.
