EBF5: Bossmore

Here’s another boss.
This one attacks twice per turn and uses a lot of different spells and status effects!
I’m very happy with how it turned out, I think I managed to make it quite different from all previous bosses.

EBF5 Current Foe Count: 149

This is terrifyingly hilarious. Great. Cats in this universe are now:
    – Ancient advanced civilization being punished for laziness
    – hive-minded
    – BEES!!
    – and live in honeycombs. :scared:

Well, maybe not run, but how about one of the cats stick its head out and waves a white flag or something like that?

Hm, no retreat animation for this one. I always thought of the cats as some bunch of fanatics so it make s sense that they are fighting to the bitter end!

Are we sure that’s a cat nest? It seems to be home to more blow flies & fairies than actual cats. :wut:

Great concept and mostly good execution. I agree with Spirare that the bandages don’t make sense and the rocking on the last bit is WAY too fast. The rocking at first looks ok and mostly natural, but after the last upward branch disappears the thing just goes nuts and it looks pretty strange.

Very nice matt another plant boss but are the kittites necessary I mean nolegs would surly find this inhumane
also nice attack variations that was a good idea.

P.S. is this gonna be a actual boss or steam only.

P.P.S Does matt eat the corpses of the cat’s plz say no 😥

    WhAT thE HeLl is THis

I like the concept, not so much the execution (in both senses of the word).

For one… I dislike how bandages just randomly appear on hit2. Tiny, unpatched cracks would be better imo. The areas where orange goo ooze out seem odd as well; I’d also like some tiny cracked bits that aren’t yet pouring goop to be visible at the edges of where it’s coming out.

And then the death animation. Shaking *that* quickly seems unnecessary IMO.
Having a cat or two start to pop out of the holes before the huge explosion (whether pushed out by the shaking or trying to climb out before it explodes and kills them all) would be nice as well.

Besides the damage and death, it looks nice. I’m interested to see how you’ll play this into the story (and the dialogue based around it).

Fantastic! I always enjoy the ‘enemy hives/creator’ style of bosses. And that death animation is just one huge gut punch.

If non of the other bosses are a ‘wake-up-call-boss’, I can imagine this one will be. Good spell variety makes picking armor harder and outright ignoring some damage, and that ‘two moves per turn’ will be a very nasty surprise to people. I can tell this will be a good fight.

Only thing I am not sure is who to have in the party, just for the dialog. Boss dialog is some of my favorite parts of your writing, and pretty much everyone will have great reasons to talk during this mission. Natz wants to protect the cats, lance wants to kill em all, NoLegs is a cat obviously, Anna likes the more ‘natural’ enemies, and matt likes cats too if i am not mistaken.(either to keep like Nolegs, or to eat.)

Speaking of above, if two characters are designed to say something for an enemy/move/enemy attack: in EBF4 I think one gained priority and spoke while the other person’s line was never heard. Will this also be the case in this game, or are you thinking of making it so multiple people can comment on something, or bicker back and forth in battle? For this boss in particular, its intro and especially death could have responses from pretty much every party member, and I’d be interested how you handle that.

Just off the top of my head, you could add a ‘combat log’. A menu that can be opened up to show the last several actions in battle. So if someone gets hit by something that you don’t notice, you can look back at the log and figure out what. Or if two people say something, both would be viewable in the log. Not like its ever been needed before in EBF, but just an idea.

Well in EBF5 a lot of the enemies will talk too, but the player’s dialogue will probably work almost the same.

So is NoLegs from a cat nest or something?
Also, there seems to be alot of attacks where stuff comes from above and just shoot at people, like the Razor Leaf attack, though that may be just me.
