EBF5: Leftover Ideas

Hey guys, this is a list of some leftover stuff that won’t be in the EBF5 at launch, but I’d like to add to the game later.

A battle arena dungeon, where players must fight waves of enemies solo. Combat with just one character is something I haven’t explored much in the series, and it could add a very interesting challenge to the game. Additionally, summons could be disabled, forcing you to rely only on each character’s unique skills. Even a regular foe could feel like a boss fight.
• A library dungeon, with paper cut-out style enemies. Trying out different art styles is fun, and a dungeon like this could make it work nicely in context too. It also let’s me use a lot of my old sketches of tanks and robots in the game. Plus a library could be filled with lots of lore and information, if that’s something people would like to see more of.
Hidden portable game consoles, which would initiate battles against one-of-a-kind pixel-art foes. The aim is to have something like a treasure chest, except the treasure is that you get a chance to capture a rare enemy. This is another chance to play with different art styles, and it’s likely I could even host another foe competition for this one.
• Challenge runs – I’ve mentioned this before, but I’d like to add the option to replay the game with some differences, including: shuffled equipment locations, different weather, stronger foes, and various other little changes that could make the game feel fresh for another playthrough.

Anyhow, this list will probably still grow as I think of more interesting ideas. And ya’ll better buy the game if you want me to keep working on it after launch.

Don’t worry, I’ve had money reserved for this game since the 40% mark and it is raring to both literally and metaphorically fly out of my pocket towards my computer the moment this game comes out

Adding to the idea of fighting solo, what about the option to control how many party members enter battles (at least in a premium dungeon that gives no EXP)? Could go as far as…soloing BOSSES!! Granted, the level scaling might have to adjust for such a feat to be possible on EPic. Keyword: MIGHT!

I played the battle demo a couple days ago..think like the 6th or 7th time…but i got the glitch weather
ik it blinds stats/status by random but ere’s a idea…even the attacks that the element is based off weapon could “glitch” and cause a different status then what it should
makes it more of a hazard then the shroud status if it’s done like that
making epic…possibly more epicly difficult :phone2: :bacon:

Sounds like some cool ideas! One thing you could also do is make unique status effects for the book and pixel boss fights that affect the party. Like one turns them into paper forms and one into pixel forms.

I’m not sure if this was suggested before (probably already has) but instead of shuffled equipment, how about shuffled encounters? Basically like a randomized Pokemon mod, where you can run into any sort of encounter at any time (scaled by level, of course.) From what I understand, enemy encounters and formations are static if the engine is anything like the previous games, so it may be a little weird to implement a dynamic randomizer for encounters… but maybe it can shuffle through the known formations instead?

Hm, that would leave you with VERY random foe-sets, and non-thematic ones. Big issue in this game. Also, foes are meant to get somewhat harder as you progress outside of scaling level. There’s a reason you don’t fight Elementals in the very first dungeon.

    Ideas for challenge run:
-the challenge run could use some shuffled mobs with scaled stats in addition to the “harder foes”, like, using ebf4 for example, have some red crystals (the thingy the destroyer summons) and red dragons join the foes in the volcano, but with scaled down stats. Or even to increase the challenge more drastically, mix up the elements too so you can’t just stack one element’s defense and have a loadout be effective for every foe in a fight.

-Every X maps you explore increase foe level by 1 and gives you some exp and AP. The foes themselves don’t. Or only first time kills gives exp/ap, something like that. It’s a bit like a built in “check” to keep your strength in line with the foes, which is very difficult to keep track of when playing normally, and overleveling skills/stats when running around opening every chest sometimes breaks the more challenging fights for me. During my playthroughs, sometimes I reach bosses 1 or even 2 level(s) higher than them accidentally, and that makes the fight…not very fun.

What you are talking about with mixing up the elemental damage seems a bit unlikely, though having summoned foes be stronger foes would be cool. Like “Other Minions” giving you a different summoned foe (so normally a Fire Elemental is summoned, instead you fight an Ice Elemental)

      Reply
      1. Fanboy#3

I think I’ll make my self clearer. The “mixing up elements” means that perhaps you get the, say factory machines(lightning) and white bear (holy) appear in the same fight. Basically, remove the thematic constraint like having only plants in forests or only fire breathing monsters in the volcano.

Oh okay that sounds pretty cool. :yay: It’d probably involve some serious alterations to the code, but it would be fun.

I love love LOVE the idea of solo player arena, but slightly different from what you proposed.

Instead of waves of enemies, in which the lack of sustainability will probably break matt and no legs, have it be single hard fights. Of ebf4, I enjoyed the “stronger version of X boss” and the normal bosses themselves (and mammoth and zombie dragon…you get the gist) much more than the 30 waves grind or normal mobs (which I often “skip” by playing on easy after the second playthrough), and that was with practically infinite items and a healer.

Something real spicy much, much later down the road:
A Bonus Adventure/Area which introduces an entirely new player character (either joining the party, or solo destroying everything).
Ronja the gardener, Phyrnna the music angel, or maybe a returning boss like Akron?

    Reply
    1. HamFantasy

A Phyrnna story arc would be awesome :stars:
It’d be nice to have Akron be that one boss that reappears in every main game. Each time recounting his travels so far, each time failing to die not by choice, but because a rouge shard escapes the battle…
I’mma come up with something about that.

For the randomizer, as someone who watches randomized Zelda speedruns, might I suggest seeds instead of full randomness? Basically you still have randomly generated equipment/enemies/etc. but they’re consistent to a certain value that can be entered to either replay a certain set of randomness or for others to play the same randomness as you such as in a speedrun contest. That will also give you more control over the randomness as you can just remove “impossible” seeds from the list (sorta like FreeCell).
Just add a random value generator to the seed input screen and presto, you still have “true” randomness but with the option to replay especially easy, hard, or silly seeds as desired.

Don’t 100% know if you’re going to go with reviewing the old days or come up with new and original lore for the Library dungeon; but if you go the review route, Matt and Natalie never did actually beat Lazarus. I think it’d make a good bookends if Lazarus (and possibly Lancelot) were the Library dungeon’s end boss. It could even be a refight based on the original flash (but with one more phase after the Peta Flare teamwipe attack).

I must say these ideas seem great Matt. It encourages further exploration by adding hidden details and makes replaying worth it by enabling new features. I sincerely hope this game produces a degree of success for you, you’ve earned it already.

I’d say a MARDEK 3 style arena would be good; each character faces a unique set up of foes which would be easily to breeze through for a full party, but alone the fights are difficult. Based on what Matt said, the fights are also specifically arranged to draw out a character’s signature skills, so
Having a mini-boss for each one would work out interestingly. Maybe a mock-Dark Player, some sort of “Wraith Player”, complete with similar lines when attacking. Lance fighting a toned down Valkyrie tank by himself would be fun, as would a shattered fragment of some past foe who may or may not be gone forever. Also, some of the BH bosses could be used for post-release content. I mean, BH is already done with single character so in terms of “lets have Akron be fought by a single character!” there is less of a jump than the others.

As for challenge runs. Making enemies enter the battle buffed could be nice. Like this dispel at the beginning of a fight has a special value as starting strategy when facing heavy buffed foes. Not necessarily every foe, but maybe those where it makes sense to enter battle beefed up/prepared.

Looking forward for those challenge runs as they might improve the replayability.

For the battle arena dungeon maybe a suggestion to add there. Maybe it could be worth a thought if such single-character fights would grant you 2-3 actions instead of just 1 till the enemy starts his turn. The enemy could get the same benefit having 2-3 actions instead of just 1. The first turn could start with a single action though, because it could be unfair to give you 3 actions and the enemies not having any way to retaliate as he might die in those 3 turns.

    1. HamFantasy

Look at MARDEK. You still get a single turn (though Auto Haste is HIGHLY recommended, so you basically fight with two there), but the foes are meant to be fought by the 1. So maybe two turns for you, foes get a normal turn. Foe levels are scaled to be below yours, but not by too much…

Big prize, great risks, It gives you a chance to “wreck” the game if you’re good enough, meaning that those “easy” battles would be pointless.

The “fight foe, get loot” are called “Monster-in-a-Box”. Sort of like a Mimic, the point is 1. lulz and 2. you have to fight for the loot, and this is done instead of a monster blocking the road to get the loot.

hi matt! about the battle arena dungeon… how about doing it like final fantasy 7 did it? remember the battlesquare in gold saucer? where you had to fight waves of enemies and after everywave you get one more handycap? would it not be a nice and challeging idea trying something like that instead of disabling it whole?

We all gonna buy this game when it comes out, I’ve been checking every day to see when you release it. These additions could be DLCs (so you can profit off the hard work it’ll take to add them in). I am especially looking forward to random chests, not just equipment but totally random.

The individual arenas could be great. PseudoLoneWolf from Kongregate did this in his Mardek RPG Chapter 3, around the same era as EBF3; I’m sure you’re familiar. I found them to be uniquely challenging and made me appreciate undervalued chars more like the Siren girl and Inventor guy. Since EBF4 had the problem of Anna being overshadowed by more versatile teammembers lategame, an arena that forced you to use her exclusively could help people optimize her better. This would also help with the new character NoLegs.

I also would really like the Challenge Run idea. EBF4 had the 3 playthroughs achievement which got tired as soon as you maxed all skills and beat everything on Epic, so anything to differentiate the playthroughs would be welcome, especially different quest rewards from NPCs who only give out skills you already got from a previous run.

The library idea could be cool but would require a lot of commitment to establishing real lore to the games, assuming your statement “A library could be filled with lots of lore and information” is for real. There’s currently continuity between progression of foes and general plots of each EBF game (Bullet Heaven games and Adventure Story come across as non-canon), but not much beyond that. Most of the lore is honestly around Lance and his role as a previous villain. And while I remain confident your artistic vision for the EBF universe is far broader than this, there’s a lot of blanks to be filled here, all at once, and you should ensure you’re up to that before venturing out on it.

The game consoles idea is fine but rarity, so far, has not really been existent in the games since all non-boss enemies respawn (and we all know to scan boss enemies from the beginning), so introduction of that concept might bring backlash, especially given a single run can be very long (not a bad thing, but depressing for completionists if you find out halfway through that you missed something). Hopefully all enemies would be findable in a single playthrough also, even if there was but a single chance to fight them each.

I think he means that the fights are unique among the many fights in the game, no others are like it. The fights are repeatable though.

One thing that´s pretty cool about the library dungeon is that we, fans, could write some of the lore (the secondary things) and help you with some of the work. Also is practical, because you will do it AFTER the game is released, so there will be no confusions, since we would have already played the game, and we´ll know how the story plays out.

If you want to go full-randomizer, you could randomize who in the party gets what skills. Maybe randomize the moves of the enemies too.

      Reply
      1. HamFantasy

Randomizing the skills and moves would have serious side effects including COMPLETELY BREAKING THE GAME. Sure the prospect would be fun, but it would probably involve so much change and restrategizing that it would be annoying at best and fundamentally impossible at worst.
Randomizing the equipment locations sounds fun, as long as nothing goes to the “Premium” areas. Imagine if the EBF4 Fenrir’s Jaw was replaced with Equilibrium.

        1. Crash

Yeah, it would be really weird. It could be random within certain parameters of course, so you don’t get one character whose only damaging skill is a basic attack or they don’t randomly roll abilities that deal duplicate damage types or similar. My pitch is oversimplified, but if pulled off well I think it could allow for some interesting replayability and/or marketing potential via youtubers/streamers.

I dunno, i’m just brainstorming. :smirk:

Gotta say i find those ideas both unique and very interesting. Especially the Solo Player Arena sound like an amazing idea, since I’ve seen that in only one of the many JRPG styled games I’ve played. And i loved it. If you added a few winnable equips, maybe some sort of “Ultima-weapons” solely for the corresponding character you play with, i think that would add the icing on the cake of awesome right there! Not meaning the weapons to be completely overpowered, so you don’t need the others anymore, since that would ruin the game a little, but at least very useful. What do you think? Is there a catch, or does that sound possible? ❓

About the “arena dungeon”, I suggest you to “play” Mardek 2 and Mardek 3, It has an area called Cambria, which develops something pretty similar to what you’re trying to do, It may give you some ideas.

Btw, I LOVED the idea of a “library dungeon” with sketch old designs, It kinda reminded me of FFV.

Pseudolonewolf is kind of very extremely depressed. Things…happened I guess. I’m not entirely sure what the story was. I don’t actually even know if he’s still alive. 😥
MARDEK was a true gem, much like EBF, and I really wished it would have continued. It probably would have ended at 5 instead though, once you get really high in game count with a single continuity the available ideas might begin to wear thin, or you start wanting to make other projects.
Apparently there’s been some occasional talk about a fan made non-canonical MARDEK 4, though I know nothing else about it.

Actually he just did very different new versions of Mardek… but i never found a place where you can play them, and they also didn’t look very promising. I just wanted the original to continue. But so much for that, we shouldn’t abuse this comment section further. EBF5 is cannon here :yay:
