EBF5: Map Style Test

Spent the whole day putting this scene together. The aim was to see if I can recycle most of EBF4’s map assets but also make them look better, and I think I succeeded in that. EBF5 will have proper land tiles this time round, instead of the lazy mess of the previous game, and the old stuff is still compatible with the new, stylistically. Woop!

What do you think?

    Cat 1: Hows your day?

Cat 2: Same as last time.

    Cat 1: Cool.

Cat 2: I wish we could move.

Map is looking amazing, and the demo for the battles is great too! Game is looking to be exciting, super hyped, played all of them, and multiple times through 3 and 4 on various difficulties, and this just seems like the others but super more epic!

This scene has so much brown in it I mistook it for a PS2 game :yay: Jokes aside, is that jsut one screen? It seems alot larger then before. If they are gonna be bigger can we get a bit of a speed boost to how fast your party moves on them? It was prety rough going up Battle Mountain only to have to go back to town because I need to upgrade some weird ass weapon I never used before to beat a boss. Regardless, I really like this scene simply because it feels more 3D and has a natural flow to the rock formation. There isn’t much going on but it feels like there is. I think I need to lay off the shrooms

How about you add trap tiles? It could kinda be like when you step on a certain tile a special event happens. Defiantly not an enemy because that would be too much like old RPGs but maybe you could discover secret rooms with this. It would also encourage the player to explore the entire map to see if they can find some secret room.

Either way it looks great so far. Keep up the good work :stars:

I also love that you dropped a few Easter eggs from the EBF4 game! *Don’t think I didn’t notice that ladder :hurray: *

I think that this area looks neat. :stars: A little similar to EBF4 though.. 😡 I also think that the chest’s should look different in every area. ❓

    Looks great! :yay:

Just like the others have said already: try to mix things up with different chest/level theme aestatics.

First of all, great job! This map looks certainly good and it would be fine if it appeared in the final game the way it is now.
However, since you asked for feedback… This looks kind of similar to previous Godcat ruins in EBF3 and EBF4. I think the problem is that all these are desert-like areas with hills, rocks, broken pillars and cat statues. So (this is just my opinion) I think you should avoid common elements in areas that look like previous EBF locations.
For example: if you create a cave, you shouldn’t include crystals. If you create a village in snow, don’t fill it with snowmen and other snow dolls. I think Ashen Wood (was that its name?) is a great example of this: it is a forest, yet you made it look different from EBF3’s forest by including fire and burnt trees.
To sum up: it’s great that you recycle previous assets, but you should try to combine them in different ways than you did in previous games. In this map, for example, I would remove the cats and the pillar.

Maybe this is the new starting area? your making your way down the mountain after beating godcat to find a town and maybe when they make it to the town all their items and gear are stripped from them in some way? that’s how i feel it may go.
Looks awesome Matt though i do agree with others in that the Chests have been very samey for the past 2 games now maybe it is time to rework there design and maybe even with different functions like some aren’t able to open unless with certain spells or some holding enemies inside.

It may not be just one kind of treasure chest. For example… the legendary chest (the legendary key may emerge from inside the bubble when you kill the enemy in battle), the magical chest (to find the crystal stone to unlock and place those stones in the void above the treasure chest.)………. Different styles like these can be made. (by the way) Do we cross the map on the map? :smirk:

I like this idea, it would tell us what to set our goals for, what is worth wasting recourses for.

In other words, how about a different chest sprite for each area (such as white-and-blue if there’s another snow-themed area) ❓

I think that a new chest texture would be cool just because it’s one of the most important map objects so the sprite should be perfected.

    Just a thought.

Maybe different styled chests for different areas? In EBF4 I thought the chests looked fine in some areas, like the beach and the temple, but were kind of jarring against other areas, like the factory.

It looks pretty nice, but I think it would be great if we could get some new environments for this game. Variety is the spice of life, you know?
