Christmas Giveaway Results

Hey guys, the Christmas Steam key giveaway is over and I’ve sent out 40 game keys by email!

The entry requirement for the giveaway was telling me a bit about your gaming life.
I got nearly 400 entries and a lot of stories. It was nice to see that many people got into gaming playing the sorts of games I played when I was younger: Zelda and Pokemon on Nintendo consoles, Heroes of Might and Magic and Age of Empires on PC, Final Fantasy games on PS1, old stuff on emulators, free MMO games like Maple Story, and a lot of Flash games too (though I still haven’t played Mardek). I was also reminded to play Doki Doki, Hollow Knight, Cuphead, and LISA. These games are on my radar, but as always it’s just a case of playing through everything else first.

I was mildly annoyed by how popular rogue-likes were though! I think games like Binding of Isaac, Dead Cells and Enter the Gungeon would have been better off with actual designed levels instead of randomly generated ones that you were forced to replay over and over. I guess some people like their nearly endless games. But I guess I am slightly out of touch these days, as I’ve not played Team Fortress 2, Dota 2, Overwatch or PUBG.

A few people mentioned that EBF4 was the first game they played on Steam, and got them into downloadable games. Most people were very long-time fans, but there were a few that just recently played my games for the first time. Apparently quite a few people have tried playing the EBF games co-op with a friend, with each person controlling a different character in battle. This is weird, but it’s also the sort of thing I might have tried when I was younger.

Anyway, thanks for all the holiday wishes and hope you’re all having a good time!

Well, congratulations to the winners, and happy new years everybody.
It was also a good experience seeing other people’s stories, I mean, its not everyday that you see other people like you telling their experience about the things that both of you like.
I also like that idea of “one person controls one RPG character” could be a good RPG playthrough (Final Fantasy Tactics, Fire Emblem, Mario & Luigi or any RPG ever)… the only problem is to find people to do so… (or just play D&D too.)

Can’t wait for you to play and maybe make a blog about that one :smirk:
I watched a few important parts of LPs of Doki Doki, because I didn’t know it was free and because it’s anime (which I slightly hate) and a visual novel (which I hate hate). I’m not going to go into much detail of the interesting parts so I don’t spoil it for you, but it takes hours to get there.
Lastly, it’s meta, which was pretty cool to me back when the Stanley Parable released and still was while Undertale released, but by now honestly gets stale imo.
    Haven’t played Hollow Knight.
I bought Cuphead and it’s honestly easier than people say, at least for me. No boss took me more than 20 minutes of practise to defeat, usually 10-15, though I still have like 1 or 2 bosses and then the final one left, and I did watch a few episodes of a guy I watch so I had a headstart. Though that’s not the case for this game only, because honestly, quite a lot of Youtubers kind of suck at games. Maybe I’m just better than average, I dunno.

For me, it’s partially the endless gameplay, but it’s also the higher learning curve and some unpredictability. Also the randomness. Probably why I love Borderlands quite a bit. Yeah, you can get a unique run on most games too by using unusual equipment and builds, but for one thing I’m just too lazy to come up with ideas, and secondary, most of these are either almost the same as normal runs or unbelievably hard.
As for classic games, I played some Fire Emblem GBA titles on my phone a few months back, but only beat FE8, FE7 just has an annoying end-game to get through. On a side note, I had a Super Mario Bros 3. on GBA but on a broken cartridge that didn’t save, so I had to beat it in one go, so it was like playing on the NES. I guess. Maybe, haven’t played that version
I don’t know why I mentioned that last part, oh well.

Thumbs up for Hollow Knight. Only took me about 70 hours to complete and a lot of curse-words. Runs circles around Cuphead and Dead Cells. But it’s subjective I guess.

Thanks for your games, once again. And happy 2018!

When you said the giveaway would be on the 27th and I didn’t get anything by then I had already assumed I didn’t win, so seeing your email in my inbox first thing in the morning really made my day =D
I guess I can relate to your rogue-like peeves, even if I was one of the ones who talked about them myself. Mostly because I agree with you that a directed experience would make a lot of games better,I think proceduraly generated games are easy to design though. In my opinion, making a directed experience requires a lot more effort than just jamming a bunch of possible layouts together and making sure that no matter what layout you get, it will be somewhat balanced. So I can definitely see how a game developer would find it annoying that games like these are on the spotlight instead of the carefully crafted directed experiences that make narrative storytelling through videogames so compelling to begin with.
On a sidenote though, I suppose you’re not going to reveal the method used for choosing the winners? From your comments on this post, I guess you chose the ones you identified myself with, but looking back at what I said, it seems like it could also be the exact opposite ❓
Anyways, thanks for the giveaway, I appreciate it immensely, and happy new years

My method is super secret, but I’m definitely trying to let a variety of people win!
