EBF5: Booklearning

I just noticed a stream of EBF5 starting, so I figured I’d share it. https://www.twitch.tv/JaRew

In other news, the library dungeon is mostly done, and I’ve got some more books to fill with tips. So let me know if there’s any mechanics that aren’t explained in enough detail, and I’ll explain them there. So far I’ve mentioned double/triple critical hits and some upcoming nerfs to the bless status.

Should Mother Earth give more turns worth of Bless and/or give it to backup (if not done already) to compensate for the nerf? Heck, maybe buff the Wooden Idol and the Wise Mirror summons in this area as well?

I personally think it should for Mother Earth and maybe with a slight SP cost reduction for summons. Or the new effect, which extends positive effects for your party also prevents consumption of those effect. For enemies it would mean they won’t use up effects like “Weaken” when dealing dark elemental damage. As drawback of this status protection maybe also negative effects do not count down?

On another note: I’d love to see some effects which allows a character to switch 1 piece or all pieces of equipment without using up their actual action. (Weaker haste but cheaper at better trigger rate than “Haste”)

Virus mechanic seems unclear to me.

Lovable and target status also feel confusing.

Also agree that combined chances are unclear : if I use a summon that has 100% chance to stun on a foe that has 100% chance to resist it, what are may supposed chance to stun ???

I would add something about how the order of actions proceed in battle. Specifically so the last enemy of a wave is killed by a certain action, newer players can learn which will cause the next wave of enemies to attack immediately vs which will allow the player to get their actions first.

So for the battle order being (if I recall correctly):
    1. Weather effects
    2. Equipment activation (like woolly mammoth)
    3. Player actions
    4. Enemy actions (4a enemy action 1, 4b optional player counterattack, 4c enemy action 2, 4d optional player counterattack … continue until all enemies have attacked)
    5. End of turn

So if the last enemy of a wave is killed by a weather effect (like airstrike) or an equipment activation (like woolly mammoth) then the player will get actions before a new wave can attack, but if the last enemy is killed by the last of the players normal actions or by a counterattack then the new wave can act immediately.

A long time ago before I figured out the turn order, i remember being miffed in ebf4 about a new wave of dragons coming in and immediately killing me when I thought I would of had a chance to heal first. I could see new players mistakenly thinking the game will just arbitrary decide to let the enemies get free action.

Honestly, the only thing that made Bless OP was the fact that it also blocked dispel. If Dispel removed it like it does other positive buffs, I don’t think it would need to be nerfed further. 😐

I personally like to get a bless build if I got trouble getting the most status resistances I needed. I’m not sure how I’ll like the nerf to it, it sounds awful theoretically but who knows how it will play out practically? If it should consume a stack of bless when applying negative effects, my suggestion would be to first make the status resistance check, to eventually resist it and THEREAFTER the bless stack removal, like this it even makes sense using bless on characters which have certain status resistances. If it however would consume a stack for an effect you would block it surely feels awkward.

However, I feel like this nerf could need some tradeoff. Be it more stacks from abilities or lightly increased resistance to all status effects to eventually resist them without consuming bless(20-30% maybe to all status resistances while blessed?).

Agree on the resistance thing, maybe state some details like how 100% status resistance will not block negative statuses from your armor.

Also what about bless is getting nerfed and why?

Each time a player/foe gets hit with a negative status effect they will lose bless stacks, and that was done because bless is overpowered, since it stops all status effects.

Won’t that make it pretty much completely ineffective against multihit attacks that apply statuses? Or will it be capped at one per overall attack like other statuses like Wet?

Why would Bless be the only status that isn’t affected only at the final hit ? What will happens is stuff like “dispel removes 3 stacks” , “syphon removes 2” , etc

            What?
Bless would be easily destroyed by, say, Vines or Cacti, which apply repeated instances of Poison, if each application removed a stack of Bless. Similar to how Wet, Dry, Curse, Weaken, and Stun would get shredded by multihit attacks (and Freeze rendered practically useless) in EBF4, whereas in EBF5 only one stack of each of those statuses is removed per total attack.

            @gimmethegepgun

Those skills don’t “apply repeated instances of poison.” They only apply it once at the end of the attack. Probably over 95% of the skills work like that. No matter how many hits only one status application happens. (I only recall the War Mammoth being an exception to this but even then it’s only twice and 20% stagger. A “staggering” 4% for it to consume 2 bless stacks.) So the bless nerf won’t cause something like that to happen.

Can’t say if it specifically belongs into books, but I often missed some details on chances to trigger auto-skills, between wave summons, etc. Also to which degree increased status chance or increased elemental damage impacts your trigger chance or damage dealt respectively. No need to state the exact multiplier or anything like this, just sth like “it is even possible to nearly double the chance by just using 2 items granting this bonus” or such. Basically anything which might cause confusion or throws in the question if those effects stack or not might be helpful.

Another thing I can’t recall that clear but might be important to clarify? “Boosting an elemental skill doesn’t increase the power of weapon elemental skills, so these which use the weapon’s element instead of an abilities’ element.” Sth like this might help? It’s been a while so I really can’t say if this was somewhere mentioned or even needs to be mentioned. I just feel like it could.

Another thing which might be maybe interesting to state: “If an enemy is resistant by 100% to effects like Curse or Weaken this means he is immune to those status effect. Status chance is multiplied by the enemies resistance. An 100% resistance equals a x0 multiplier and 50% resistance an x0.5 multiplier as examples.

I’m starting to think it’s not gonna happen.
So many browsers have Flash blocked now, and it’s gonna be a pain for most users to set it up correctly so that saved games work.
I don’t want to release such a broken version of the game – but the free version will remain here on this website.

But I’ll consider it again once version 2 is done.

You should at least use Kongregate inbox’s Game Message feature to broadcast about EBF5, just to increase your exposure.
