EBF5: Bossmore 2

Here’s the evil version of yesterday’s boss.
I might like this one even more. Lot’s of Binding of Isaac vibes going on.

That’s all of the foes finished now, except for the evil players and final boss, which I’ll have to come back to later.

There’s still a lot of foes that I’d like to include in the game, both new and returning ones, but I’ll save those for a possible update like I did with EBF4. If lots of people buy the game – I’ll add even more stuff to it.

It’s time for me to go back to working on the players: Updating the graphics I’ve done so far, and then working on the animations and armor for the guys.

EBF5 Current Foe Count: 150

Probably the origin but those blinking explode-y flies remind me of The Binding of Issac. The flies in general remind me of it, actually. :ooo:

Just saw your thing about “Epic 7”. I have to say, it reminded me about a couple other flash RPGs I’ve played in the past. It mostly made me think about the turn system though.

It would be a pretty big departure from the standard ‘final fantasy turn based style’ that you’ve done for the past games. But have you ever considered a more ‘speed bar’ style of turns? Where each player and enemy has a certain speed and that determines how fast they take to reach their next turn? Crystal story and its sequel are what come to mind in this case. It could help differentiate the players a bit more too.

Matt has tons of attack and defense, Nat has magic and m. defense, while lance and Anna both have good accuracy and mostly mixed attacks. While NoLegs I think was going to be high evade as well, in other words. Lance, Anna, and Nolegs all seem to kind of cover a ‘mid ground’ between super tank Matt and squishy spell slinger Nat. A speed stat could help differentiate them a bit more: Nolegs could be fastest, followed by Anna. And since Matt was kind of a game breaker in EBF4: huge survivability and damage output, with the possibility of giving him decent support moves, a slower speed could easily make up for this.

Of course it is probably a bit far in development/conception to implement this, but I was more curious if you had ever considered it.

Matt, have you ever considered using Autodesk Scaleform to improve your graphics performance to 60fps? I don’t know why you haven’t implemented Dragon Bones or a skeletal animation API in general, but Brad Borne is using it to great effect with Fancy Pants at the moment.

Is Scaleform available for indie PC devs? Last I heard they were only doing indie licenses for mobile, they didn’t even want to deal with me at all.

I’m not sure about that. Last I heard they were incorporating it with Stingray or something, though they did come up with Scaleform for Unity and other platforms.

Maybe you should try and ask them again?

An issue that I had with EBF4 which I think you have addressed with this boss is how buffing evade and debuffing enemy accuracy tended to trivialize most bossfights. This boss having bind and two moves per turn should deal with this strategy quite well. In EBF3 this was less of an issue because the bosses could only go to -20% accuracy.

So Kupo, any ideias on the difficulty of EBF5?
Maybe im just dumb, but i got trough EBF4 on Epic with mostly just one strategy: lot’s of buffs. I think there is plenty of room for more variety in strategy, both for players and foes. That would be great to see.

Huh, only 4 main bosses not including the main boss. Thought that was a little small at first, but looking back, I guess 4 had just as many bosses, including a couple mini-bosses. Either way, I do quite like the Issac feel going on with this one, just like the voodoo dolls. I still think creepy goes really good in your cute style. Makes a very nice looking contrast and design.

Excited to see updates for the players, seen so many updates for monsters and spells, going to be exciting to eventually get a player preview.

Have you decided which variation of boss you are going to use for each area, and what you’ll do with the other ones?

And more as an aside, I am kind of hoping the evil players won’t just be dark- versions of them again. Those were fun, tough fights and good designs, but the dark aspect is just a bit overdone. Not to mention always being weak to holy was kind of an easy way to beat them, even if it is only a 50% and not 100%, judgement and holy blade are two of the stronger moves in game.

Even better than the original one, this very well might be my favorite boss yet! Only thing I don’t like too much about them is the intro, but since they are stationary bosses I can see why it was done. Fantastic work as always, love the new attacks with flies and spiders, and the pentagram magic attack is really awesome!! :yay:

And I thought that missile couldn’t get more threatening.

I’m not really sure how you could give this thing an intro, because unlike the other bosses this one isn’t exactly capable of moving…

Actually the boss is super cute :yay:
But the cats seem to be on a lot of bosses are the bosses there homes or are the cat’s creating these monsters or just manipulation them?

Hey can we actually use the bug spells like the spiders and exploding flies if we can would they be Anna’s spell? Or could they be a summon?
Also can we use special type 2 it looks so fricking cool makes me think of hell which to me is fun mwhahahaha :phone2:

Nice. Slight layering issue on Attack 1 though: the second and third attacks are in front of the first ones, when they should be behind.
